The room shapes the work
Founders obsess over strategy and tolerate their environment. It is usually the wrong way around.
Physical space is treated as overhead. It is closer to a variable in the output. Ceiling height, light, whether the table is long enough that people stay after — these decide how long conversations run and how candid they get.
Why a workshop, not an office
An office is organized around individual output. A workshop is organized around shared work: surfaces you can spread things across, walls you can put things on, and enough room for a group to stand around one problem. The difference sounds cosmetic until you have watched both in operation.
People behave the way a room invites them to behave.
The Ticket 500 space in Newport Beach was chosen on exactly these terms — a historic building with vaulted beams, warm light and one long table. It is a room that makes it slightly awkward to leave early, which turns out to be the most valuable feature it has.
If you cannot change your building, change the table. Most of the effect is available for the price of paying attention.
